Olympic Swim Coach Teaches Crossings Kids to Swim
Every summer for eight weeks resident children and kids from
the surrounding neighborhoods are taught swimming, pool safety and CPR/ first
aid techniques in our Crossings at North Hills’ pool. The program continues to grow, as every year
more children participate. In addition
to our residents, our local non-profit partner North Valley Caring Services (NVCS) refers neighborhood children to
our program. UHC social service director Cesar Delgado who organizes the
program said, "In summer 2016 the program grew to more than 60 children
attending beginning and intermediate classes.” In past years, Delgado recruited
certified swimming instructors, firefighters, teachers and former athletes who
generously volunteered their time. Summer 2016, the athletes in Rio de Janeiro
were not the only young swimmers receiving professional training! Former Olympic swim coach Craig Harriman,
through our non-profit partner Athletes in
Action, gave children and young mothers with infants and toddlers swimming
lessons. Summer 2017 classes will begin mid June and last until just before the
kids go back to school in August.
